For the Sake of the Name
Today’s Scripture Readings: Psalm 128:1-6 | 1 Kings 2:1-3:3 | Acts 5:1-42 | Proverbs 16:25
Today’s Scripture Focus: Acts 5:1-42
The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ (Acts 5:41-42 NIV).
As persecution came, the disciples prayed and became even bolder. When opposition came, they became even more determined to teach and preach the good news. When suffering came, they rejoiced because they considered it an honor to be counted worthy to suffer for the Name of Christ.
Such boldness challenges us. Why are we so timid? Why are we so easily intimidated? Why do we find it so hard to share the good news?
Others looked at the disciples and were amazed that God took ordinary, unschooled men and used them to boldly proclaim the truth. They recognized that the secret to their transformation was that “they had been with Jesus.”
Perhaps that is what we are lacking too. As we spend time in the presence of Jesus, waiting eagerly—expectantly—for His Spirit to empower us, we too will find the boldness we need to face our fears and live our lives willing to sacrifice all for the sake of the Name.
Are we willing to suffer disgrace for the sake of Christ?
Father, help me to be bold in teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. I abide in your presence today asking for you to empower and transform me into the likeness of Jesus. Help me to live this day for the sake of Christ and his name. Amen.
